Though, there is no hint last year of ATAP, which lost its leader airy Regina Dugan to Facebook this season. It’s not merely ATAP, either. There clearly was no sign of anything remotely experimental. Instead, we got to see the most polished version of Google’s augmented reality technology yet (which, incidentally, began in ATAP nearly four years past), new abilities for Google’s digital assistant, VR characteristics we don’t really want, and yet another great, but also boring, upgrade for Android.

Don’t get me wrong: Not one of those things are, in themselves, awful. Tango technology stands to be a learning tool that is genuinely useful, like it might eventually meet the wasted potential of Google Now the Assistant of Google is beginning to seem, and Android O seems to be a solid, if unremarkable, update. Great.
