One of the oldest known underground cities is located in Spain, in the village of Setenil de las Bodegas, located about 160 kilometers northeast of Cadiz. The village stretches along the Trejo River, with houses built under the rock, which form the outer walls and cover the settlement. In this village today there are about 3,000 inhabitants, and it is famous for its meat and bakery products and the best restaurants and café in the region.

The modern Setenil developed from the fortified city of Mauritania. The Māori settlement in the 15th century occupied the Christians and expelled its former inhabitants.
